In the Summer of 2020, our public museum offered some creative themed boxes for engaging kiddos in activities. One of the activities was this fossil dig. The box contained all we needed - the tray, sand, brush, and even the dinosaur bones! The following instructions and pictures have been assembled based on the contents of their Fossils Kit. Here is what you will need:
For younger kiddos - focus on the activity as sensory - find the items and rebury them as many times as they want. Focus on how everything feels, what it takes to bury and unbury the items, and how to work slowly and gently with the tools. For older kiddos, have them write down what they find, how it's laying in the sand, and anything else they observe (these are their field notes!) Have them sketch the fossils before they remove them. Make notes about the relationship of the bones to one another. Are they touching? Covering another part? Are they close or far apart? Paleontologists keep very detailed notes, so they should too! As always, there are ways to purchase entire kits to encourage a beginning archeologist's love of digging up dinosaurs. Here are some of the kits we've found that seem interesting:
Special thanks goes to the Kenosha Public Museum for their amazing kit and instructions which made this blog possible.
